Theatre Department shines with production of Cactus Flower

fall playPerforming the fall play “Cactus Flower”, Thursday through Saturday inside the Robert Brown Theatre, the Cowley College Theatre Department left the audience aching with laughter.

Interim Theatre Director Dejon Ewing was back in the Robert Brown Theatre directing the fall play “Cactus Flower” like she did in her first stint as theatre director at Cowley College in the 1990’s.

“Scott (MacLaughlin) would have wanted me to take care of his program and his kids,” Ewing said. “Working with the kids was an absolute joy. I told them to do this to the level and involvement that Scott made in them. They took that and ran with it.”

Cactus Flower is a 1969 comedy film directed by Gene Saks and starred Walter Matthau, Ingrid Bergman, and Goldie Hawn, who won an Oscar for her performance.

The action of the fall play took place in scenes scattered around uptown and downtown Manhattan, N.Y. in the 1970’s.

Jamison Rhoads, technical director of theatre, and student assistant Stuart Parman, did an outstanding job creating a 1970’s style set.

During the performance, middle-aged dentist Dr. Julian Winston, played by John Rohr, is enjoying an affair with Toni Simmons, played by Abby Killman, but doesn't want to be hemmed in by marriage. He prevails upon his non-glamorous assistant Stephanie Dickinson (played by Paige Karnes) to pose as his wife so as to keep from campaigning for a ring. Then, to justify his "infidelity," Dr. Winston talks his pal into pretending to be Stephanie's illicit lover. Flattered by all the attention, Stephanie begins to “doll up”.

Confronted by a newly gorgeous Stephanie, Dr. Winston realized that his Dream Girl has been right there in his office all along. As for Toni, she ended up in the arms of writer, Igor Sullivan (played by Alex Behrens).

The Theatre Department will now prepare to begin rehearsals for the Children’s Theatre production of “The Beeple”, which will be performed Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. in the Robert Brown Theatre.
