Graphic design students make eye-catching posters for Cowley Press

postersCowley Press advisor Meg Smith knew exactly who to contact when looking for ways to draw attention to the Cowley Press newspaper racks. Smith called upon the help of Cowley College graphic design instructor Mark Dykes and his students to come up with design concepts.

“This was a project Mark and I tried out last (fall) semester and it worked so well we did it again this year,” Smith said.

Dykes incorporated the project into a class assignment for his Graphic Design 1 students. The newspaper staffers brainstormed what they wanted as far as the basic premise and then acted like 'clients' describe a job for a graphic artist. The designers asked questions, verified specifics and went to work.

They presented a rough draft and then the final project.

“We ended up with some great, eye-catching posters,” Smith said.

The posters were made up of 1990’s cartoon characters. The posters can be seen at newspaper racks located in the Cowley College Cosmetology Department, near the Cowley Box Office, and in the lower level of the Brown Center.

“The Cowley Press students came to us with ideas then left us to feel it out and fine tune them,” Dykes said. “We then brought Meg’s students back in to make sure we were on the right track. My students really liked this project and enjoyed the opportunity to work with clients.”

The Graphic Design 1 students are currently dealing with local businesses to make brochures for the companies.

“Once the students are done we will bring the companies in to see if they would like to use the brochures, and if not, it will still be a good portfolio piece for the students,” Dykes said.
