AEC team competes at National Academic Quiz Tournament


AEC TeamTaking part in the National Academic Quiz Tournament Feb. 27-28 in Atlanta, GA, Cowley College’s Academic Excellence Challenge team competed well and placed 15th out of 24 teams.

The squad qualified for nationals by winning the National Academic Quiz Tournament Community College Sectional Championship.

On Friday night, Cowley faced off against Broward Community College,  whose team out of Florida, came in third place overall and had the individual No. 1 scorer for both days. 

“We had an opportunity to see and play against the best of the best in competition,” Cowley AEC sponsor Dianne Flickinger said. 

Cowley played five rounds in the preliminaries on Friday that determined its placement within the three tiers on Saturday.

Mason Warren was in 27th place out of 121 individuals on the first night of competition. 

“Mason told me that Friday night was the most fun he has had in competition during his time playing for Cowley,” Flickinger said.

Cowley met its team goal and placed in the second tier with seven other teams. 

On Saturday, Cowley played six rounds lasting 20 minutes each. The team heard 232 questions in two days.

“AEC had a wonderful time in Atlanta, GA competing at the National Academic Quiz Tournament,” Flickinger said.

State College-Manatee took home the team title as they went 11-1 at the tournament. Noah Yudewitz of Broward Community College was the top individual finisher.

Cowley was led by Anthony Maldonado’s 36th place finish, while Mason Warren was just behind in 37th place. Amy Austin (67th place) and Alex Geurin (92nd place) rounded out Cowley competitors at the national tournament.
