Cowley College and SCEDC sponsor a Business and Industry tour

Business and Industry tourSumner County Economic Development Commission (SCEDC) and Cowley College sponsored a Business and Industry tour for students from Sumner County schools on March 12.

The students and teachers toured GKN Aerospace and Countryside Motors in Wellington and then headed to Mulvane to tour the Cowley College Automotive and Welding program facilities. Students from Wellington USD 353 and Argonia USD 359 participated in the day.

The purpose of the tour was to familiarize the students with employment and education opportunities available within Sumner County.

“Students don’t usually get the opportunity to see what a manufacturing production floor looks like or get to see what happens at an automotive dealership,” stated Janis Hellard, SCEDC Director. “These students are our future workforce. We want them to know they have choices and don’t have to leave Sumner County to find a good paying job or get the education/technical skills they need to be successful. We want to encourage them to stay in Sumner County.”

Joe Clasen, Cowley College’s Career and Technical Education Department Chair, talked with students about the opportunity to take college courses while still in high school, receiving dual credit during their junior and senior years. Senate Bill 155 provides for free tuition to high school students taking the dual education path.

“This is a great benefit to the students as they could have an Associate’s degree or a Technical Certification upon graduation from high school without the cost of tuition for those two years,” Clasen said.

Those interested in more information about the Mulvane Cowley College facilities can attend their Career and Tech Day on April 9 from 8:30 a.m. to Noon.
