Friends University Faculty Jazz Quintet to perform at Cowley

Jazz QuintetThe Friends University Faculty Jazz Combo will perform a set in the Cowley College Band Room Friday, March 27 at noon. The Band Room is located at the west end of Galle-Johnson Hall on Arkansas City’s main campus. The quintet is headed up by Friends University Jazz Director, Lisa Hittle, and features four additional Friends faculty members.

“I am very excited about the Friends Faculty Jazz Quintet coming to perform for our students,” director of instrumental music Josh Fleig said. “We have developed a great relationship with Friends over the past several years and have sent a number of excellent music students their way. Friends has a fantastic music program, and one of the main reasons for this is they have these great faculty members teaching their students.”

Lisa Hittle, who has been the director of jazz studies at Friends University for more than 20 years, is a saxophone player who was recruited by the Stan Kenton Orchestra when she was still a student at Kansas State University. She will be joined by trumpeter Jeff Gordon, guitarist Randy Zellers, bassist Dan Racer, and drummer Bill Glenn.

“All of these tremendous musicians are long time faculty members at Friends,” Fleig said. “That’s why their music program is so amazing. They have so many great music educators working hard to build and strengthen the program.”

The Friends University Faculty Jazz Quintet will play a 45 minute set. The performance is free and open to the public. All students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to attend.

“This performance is primarily for our jazz students here at Cowley,” Fleig said, “but I hope a lot of people show up to hear some great jazz music.”
