Sefel serves as emcee for Kansas Youth and Military Youth of the Year festivities

Tying directly into the new Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s scholarships created at Cowley College, Cowley College Theatre Director John Sefel recently had an opportunity to serve as the emcee for the Kansas Youth of the Year and Military Youth of the Year festivities in Topeka, KS.

Prior to coming to Cowley, Sefel had previously been involved in the Boys & Girls Club as a youngster and later served under a Department of Justice Grant as the Director of Teen Outreach for the Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley in Milford, New Hampshire. While there he was the Club Level Youth of the Year coordinator.

Once Sefel arrived at Cowley he reached out to the Boys & Girls Club of Kansas to discuss opportunities.

“It was great to be able to speak about my experiences with the Boys & Girls Club, but it was even more amazing to hear the stories these teens in the program had to share,” Sefel said. The event was attended by several state representative and legislators.

“It was quite an honor to be a part of,” Sefel said.

Since 1947, the Youth of the Year and Military Youth of the Year has been the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier recognition programs, celebrating the extraordinary achievements of Club teens. Club members who earn the youth of the Year title embody the values of leadership service; academic excellence; and healthy lifestyles. They exemplify the critical impact that Boys & Girls Clubs have on the lives of teens.

State winners each receive a $5,000 scholarship and advance to regional competitions. Regional winners receive an additional $10,000 college scholarship, renewable for four years up to $40,000. Six youth, including five regional winners and a military winner, advance to the National Youth of the Year competition for a chance at an additional scholarship of $25,000, renewable up to $100,000 for four years.
