April Student of the Month inspired to achieve great things

Laura PetersburgLaura Petersburg, daughter of Mark and Deb Petersburg, was recently named Cowley College’s April Student of the Month.

The nursing major graduated from Goddard (KS) High School in 2013. While at Goddard she was involved in the choir, orchestra, and graduated in the top-10 percent of her class.

Prior to going to a private college to study nursing, Petersburg thought she would check into attending a community college to help stretch her education dollars farther.

“I visited a few schools and Cowley was by far my best option,” Petersburg said. “I felt more at home at Cowley and was inspired by the faculty.”

It was faculty members like vocal music director Connie Donatelli that impacted Petersburg on her visit to the school.

“Connie is amazing,” Petersburg said. “She is always happy and energetic. She makes her students feel like we can impact the world.”

Petersburg has remained active on the Cowley College campus and is involved in PTK, Concert Choir, and is a resident assistant in the Oscar Kimmel Dormitory. She has served as an usher at Cowley play performances, and participated in the PTK Honors in Action Research Project, and Cowley Talent Show.

She has also helped with the PTK food packaging events, campus blood drives, the Cowley clothing drive, and is a volunteer in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

“I have matured a lot,” Petersburg said. “Cowley has made me a better person.”

She has done all this while still managing a 3.51 Grade point average and being named to the Dean’s Honor Roll.

“Laura has a cheerful personality, is uplifting to other students, and is willing to give of her time with a smile,” said PTK co-sponsor Deb Layton.

Away from Cowley Petersburg is employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Dove Estates in Goddard, KS.

“This has been good to get my foot in the door and see more of the medical field,” Petersburg said.

She also earns money babysitting a few hours a week.

Being named Cowley’s April Student of the Month is an honor that Petersburg will not take for granted.

“This inspires me to keep going and continue to better myself,” Petersburg said.

After graduating from Cowley, Petersburg plans to transfer to a private college to study nursing. Her career aspirations are to impact others as a missionary.

“I am very grateful for the blessings in my life,” Petersburg said.
