Performing its spring concert Tuesday night in the Robert Brown Theatre, the Cowley College Jazz Band played several big band charts while the CC Singers performed a wide variety of vocal jazz arrangements.

Cowley College interim president Tony Crouch echoed the sentiments of those in attendance.

“As always, the performance was outstanding, but there was a special air in the room last night,” Crouch said. “It was overwhelming to me to see the visible expression of satisfaction/accomplishment/excitement/confidence on faces as they knew they had “nailed it” – and believe me, they nailed it. Those groups were having fun; they obviously love what they are doing.”

The concert also featured homegrown talent Mary Beth Byers, performing with her group, the Mary Beth Quintet. The performance by the Mary Beth Quintet marked the first effort supported by the newly established Cowley College Jazz Initiative, an entity funded by the V.J. Wilkins Foundation.

The Mary Beth Quintet performed a selection of jazz standards including Pennies From Heaven, My Funny Valentine, Alone Together, Sugar, and Georgia On My Mind. Joining Byers, who is a vocalist and trumpet player, was guitarist Malachi Million, bassist Ben Decker, saxophonist Jerome Porter, and drummer Connor Siler.

The CC Singers, under the direction of Connie Donatelli, then performed a wide variety of vocal jazz arrangements and charts from current artists such as Greg Jasperse, Michael Buble, Steve Zegree, Paris Rutherford and the great masters from the past, such as Duke Ellington, Jimmy Giuffre and Harold Arlen.

The CC Singers were accompanied by members of the Cowley Jazz rhythm section, featuring Levi Sutton on bass, Henry Flickinger on drums and Mr. Josh Fleig, director of instrumental music on guitar. Donatelli also served as an accompanist on piano.

The CC Singers performed Satin Doll, I’ve Got the World on a String, Voice Dance II , Squeeze Me, God Bless The Child, Everything, and Four Brothers.
