Graduating writers highlighted during Writers’ Corner

Writers' Corner

“These students are fantastic!” says Marlys Cervantes, co-sponsor with Ryan Doom of Creative Claws, Cowley’s writing club, to anyone who will listen. On the evening of April 30, Creative Claws hosted a Writers’ Corner followed by  a reception for Cowley’s graduating writers. Cervantes continues, “The evening proved to be a very good way to show appreciation for the excellent work this group of students has done here at Cowley.”

An audience of about 60 enjoyed the 39 works presented by 19 Cowley writers, five of whom were first-time presenters. Eleven graduates were highlighted during the evening. They were Courtney Banks, Stephanie Bloyer, Ian Brannan, Jaevin Colvin, Carrie Fulbright, Dylan Gregor, Alecia Henson, Jasmine Rasul, Kayla Thacker, Samantha Vawter and Kaylee Walker.

Lucia Morales and Tyler Felt, incoming club officers, presented Brannan and Henson with handmade wooden clipboards as thank you gifts by for serving as co-presidents this year. Brannan and Henson then surprised Cervantes, Humanities Department Chair and Director of the Creative Writing program, with flowers, gifts and a journal with notes written by some of the creative writing students and club members.

Cervantes expressed her delight with the gifts, saying, “My students always surprise and delight me with their writing growth and with their personalities that are compassionate and caring toward one another and toward Ryan and me.”

Morales expressed her appreciation for the writing program and then invited the audience to follow her into the reception area. Each of the graduates received congratulation gifts consisting of journals, books or movies that fit their personalities and/or goals at the reception.

“Lucia’s energy will lead to her success in all that she does. She’s always a surprise, with new pieces of her knowledge coming to light at unexpected times. I cannot wait to see her lead us to new heights,” Cervantes said. “She and Tyler will make a strong team.”

The last public event for the program is the student showcase next week. Life: Through Words and Lens is a showcase for writing, digital photography and Communications Practicum. It will be Thursday, May 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the Earle N. Wright Community Room.
