Donatelli preparing for final concert at Cowley

Connie Donatelli

Having spent more than 20 years leading the Cowley College Music Department, Connie Donatelli will be honored at her final performance as the school’s vocal music director when the Concert Choir and Concert Band take the Robert Brown Theatre stage at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 5.

Donatelli’s trademark energy and enthusiasm will be missed.

“I still remember when I met Connie, the words used to introduce her were, “This is Connie our vocal music director – she IS enthusiasm”,” Cowley interim president Tony Crouch said. “That introduction to her is as appropriate now as it was 21 years ago – she IS enthusiasm. Her place can be filled, but her excitement, her passion, her spunk, her enthusiasm will not be replaced.”

Donatelli, who recently announced she would be retiring May 31, 2015, began working at Cowley College in 1992 and was at the school until 1995 when she left to pursue her Master’s degree at Kansas State University. She then returned to Cowley in the fall of 1997 and has been at the school ever since.

“I can honestly say that I am the luckiest girl on the planet to have had the opportunity to teach music at Cowley College for the past 20 years,” Donatelli said. “Making music and achieving excellence on a daily basis with all of the wonderful students that have come through my door has given me so much joy throughout these many years. I have had the most amazing experiences with each and every group of students that I have worked with and have memories that will last a lifetime.”

Following the concert a reception will be held in the Earle N. Wright Community Room.

The Concert Choir will perform Music that Inspires. The Choir will sing Viva La Musica!, Christ the Appletree, The Tree of Peace, Ubi Caritas, Live your Dream, We Are One, His Eye is on the Sparrow, and Praise His Holy Name.

Instrumental music director Josh Fleig has spent the past nine years working with Donatelli in the Music Department and will have his Concert Band perform as well on Tuesday night.

“This concert is, without question, a very important event for the music department at Cowley College. Saying “farewell” to Connie will be one of the hardest things I have to do in my career thus far,” Fleig said. “I am very happy for her as she begins a new chapter in her life, but I most certainly feel a deep sadness that our time teaching together has come to an end.”

The Concert Band will perform A Joyful Fanfare by Franco Cesarini, Contrapunctus V by J.S. Bach, Double Happiness by Joseph Curiale, Gravity Wave by Brian Balmages, An Unending Legacy by Barry Milner, and Celebration Tribalesque by Randall D. Standridge.

“The music we will present comes from mostly contemporary composers, and many of the pieces exhibit a light heartedness that will leave the audience feeling a strong sense of hope and optimism,” Fleig said. “I am very excited about sharing this music with the audience.”
