Art and Design Club tour galleries in New Mexico

Cowley College’s Art and Design Club had an opportunity to visit 42 art galleries during its trip to Santa Fe, N.M. May 19-22.

The students saw a variety of paintings at the galleries and also toured the O’Keefe Museum. Santa Fe boasts more than 250 art galleries.

“Santa Fe really is an art town,” Art and Design Club sponsor Mark Flickinger said. “It was a great experience being able to get the students into the galleries so they could see what it takes to show work.”

The group stayed at the historic LaFonda Hotel. Fellow Art and Design Club sponsor Mike Fell, and IMPACT instructor Dianne Flickinger also attended the trip.

The instructors were joined by Art and Design Club students Steve Campbell, Brianna Hand, Kyle Johnston, Jazmin Lara, Mamie Manly, Sydney Westfall, and Elizabeth Whaley.

“The general consensus among the students was they wish they could go right back into the studio,” Flickinger said. “We saw a tremendous amount of contemporary work and mixed media pieces.”

Lara, who has accepted a scholarship to attend the Watkins Art Institute in Nashville, TN, is the current president of the Club. Hand will take over as Club president in the fall semester.

An added bonus to the trip, sophomore Steve Campbell, who plans to major in art at Friends University in the fall, had an opportunity to visit with the Director of the Manitou Galleries.

“He was very forthright and insightful,” Flickinger said. “Overall, it was a great trip. We are thankful for the support of the college.”
