Cowley College raises money in the fight against cancer


Relay For Life

Raising money to support the American Cancer Society, Cowley College’s Relay For Life team raised $8,268.92 during the event held Friday, June 12 at the Agri-Business Building in Arkansas City.


With figures still being tabulated, Cowley College is currently the top fundraising team at the event. All totaled, this year’s teams have raised $46,562.85 toward research for a cure for cancer.


Cowley College team members were: Jody Arnett, Heather Barker, Mindy Blatchford, Sarah Bryant, Gary Hale, Lynn Jordan, Jamie McGee, Courtney Peterson, LaVaughan Scheurich, and Mindi Shriver.


The event began with a cancer survivors lap, celebrating those who have survived cancer or are currently battling cancer.


Jamie McGee, Cowley College accounts receivable specialist, served as the Accounting Chair for the Relay For Life of Arkansas City for the fourth consecutive year and also served as Captain of the Cowley College Relay for Life team. McGee praised the work done by team member Jody Arnett.


“Jody is our biggest fundraising organizer and we can’t do it without her,” McGee said.


The Lady Tiger basketball team made a donation of $629.18 toward the college’s Relay for Life team, while members of the Tiger men’s basketball team also came out to walk in support of the event.
