Still time to enroll for exciting fall classes

With fall enrollment underway, there is still time to enroll for exciting classes at Cowley College.

With the first day of classes beginning on August 18, Cowley College is offering enrollment day events in July to help students enroll for the fall semester.

Cowley’s main campus in Arkansas City recently conducted an enrollment day event on Tuesday, July 7 and will hold another enrollment day event on Thursday, July 23. The school’s Mulvane Center will hold an enrollment day event on Wednesday, July 15. Each event will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Among the more than 70 majors and degree possibilities, Cowley is glad to offer numerous courses during the fall semester. Listed below are a few of the exciting courses Cowley College has to offer.

Accounting: In all of Cowley’s accounting programs, not only will individuals learn about accounting theory, techniques, and practices; but they will also be exposed to the basics of business. Accounting is known as the “language of business” because the terms and concepts are generally used in all fields of business. The accountant is the key figure in the reporting, analysis, and evaluation of relevant financial information to various users. The impact and importance accounting information has to other business and related fields provide many career opportunities for accountants.

Child Care and Development: The child care development program at Cowley College consists of an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Child Care & Development (Early Childhood Education) and a Child Care Certificate.

The AAS degree is recommended for those who prefer to work with children from birth through age eight in a child care and development setting, such as in-home child care or a child care facility. The AAS degree is also recommended for those who are seeking an upper level position within child care such as director of a center.

The Child Care Certificate offers advanced course work for those seeking employment within a child care center or as a licensed in-home child care provider.

Criminal Justice: The Criminal Justice program at Cowley College prepares students for a successful career in law enforcement and corrections. There is a nationwide trend toward requiring that all criminal justice professionals have at least a two-year degree, and Cowley College Associate Degree in Criminal Justice fulfills that promise.

Students that have declared a major in Criminal Justice and meet qualification guidelines are eligible to be a Student Patrol Officer. Students participating in the Student Patrol program are doing so both as a requirement and out of a desire to help the community by learning about their chosen profession. The primary focus of Student Patrol is education through experience.

Career opportunities exist in many areas: local police departments and organizations, county and state police departments, corrections, environmental protection services, juvenile facilities, crime laboratories, courts and judicial offices, and community-based corrections (probation and parole).

Graphic Design: The Graphic Design program combines the art, science, business, and technology of visual communication into a comprehensive two-year degree. Focus is on the basics of good design through problem definition, analysis, idea exploration, idea development, refinement, and production. Quality art production can only result from a solid immersion in the principles of design. All courses build on the fundamentals of design and excellence in craft.

Students may seek an Associate of Arts degree or an Associate of Applied Science degree in Graphic Design. Students may also seek an Associate of General Studies degree in web design.

Health and Physical Education: Whether it is teaching young people how to get in shape and remain physically fit for the rest of their lives, or working in the recreational field, planning organizing and directing activities to help people enjoy the free time they have recreation and physical education are fields with expanding opportunities. These are designed as transfer programs. Students can complete the first two years at Cowley, and then transfer to a four-year college or university to finish a bachelor’s degree. General education courses taken while at Cowley will transfer to most state universities in Kansas and other states.

Medical Transcription: The Medical Transcription certificate will prepare the student to enter the workforce as an entry-level medical transcriptionist. The well-qualified transcriptionist will gain proficiencies in written and oral communications, medical terminology, medical transcription, business English, and medical office procedures. Students will also acquire skills in proofreading, document formatting, and records management, as well as anatomy and physiology designed for the allied healthcare worker. Professionalism and flexibility are also stressed in the program, as employers are looking for employees who exhibit these characteristics.

Non-Destructive Testing: Cowley College quality control nondestructive testing technician program offers you a short training time for a job that is in high demand. Individuals will develop the knowledge and skills needed to perform sophisticated testing techniques that are required in many industries. Upon completion of this program, individuals will be prepared to develop, maintain, and enforce quality control programs. Prepares students to set up and calibrate equipment, interpret and evaluate results based upon nondestructive testing methods with respect to applicable codes, standards and specifications and prepares a person to be a non-destructive inspection technician and for ASNT certification examination.

Psychology: Psychology is the scientific study of human behavior. Students interested in psychology as a four-year major should be aware that these course recommendations are intended for students who are undecided about a transfer school. Students who have selected a transfer school should consult the catalog of that school and an academic advisor for requirements appropriate to the first two years of study. College catalogs and transfer guides for many four-year colleges are available through Career Services.
