Michael Meloy named September Student of the Month

MichaelComing to Cowley College from Cedar Vale High School, Michael Meloy was a quiet kid that was unsure of what he wanted to do. Now, more than a year into his time at the school, Meloy has immersed himself in campus activities and is well known and liked by many.

Meloy’s hard work has not gone unnoticed as he was recently named the school’s September Student of the Month.

Meloy, son of Susan Meloy and the late Mike Meloy, is an accounting major from Cedar Vale, KS. He graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 2013 and served as the class valedictorian.

He has three sisters, Bobbie Sue 36, Molly 21, and Mary 18.

At Cowley, he is the president of Student Senate and Phi Beta Lambda, is a Cowley Tutor, and is involved in Phi Theta Kappa and Creative Claws. He has a cumulative grade point average of 3.92.

“Cowley was close to home and it just feels comfortable here,” Meloy said. “I am an introvert by nature, but Cowley has helped me break out of my shell and has improved my mannerisms.”

Along with his activities at Cowley, Meloy has been named to the college’s Dean’s and President’s Honor Rolls. He has also been named Who’s Who in Phi Beta Lambda and placed first in Kansas Phi Beta Lambda in personal finance.

“Michael is mature way beyond his years, an excellent student, and just an all-around nice guy,” said Business, Computer and Information Technology Department Chair Rae Dale.

Meloy credits his former high school teacher Gloria McCall and Cowley College PBL sponsor Sarah Mathews for helping him be successful. He also catches himself asking whether or not his late father, Mike, would do something before making decisions.

Being named Student of the Month is an honor Meloy does not take lightly.

“I don’t know if proud is the word, but I feel good about myself and will use this as a confidence booster,” Meloy said.

Away from Cowley, Meloy is employed part-time as a hired hand at the Lackey Ranch outside Cedar Vale.
After obtaining an Associate’s Degree from Cowley College, Meloy plans to continue his education at either Wichita State University or Emporia State University.

“I am thinking about getting my CPA (certified public accountant license) and one day opening my own firm or partner with a relative of mine on an accounting firm,” Meloy said.

Until then, Meloy will continue to enjoy the opportunity to be involved in many activities and organizations at Cowley College.

“It’s a mix of anxiety and stress along with enjoyment, fulfillment, and accomplishment,” Meloy said.
