Cowley College Endowment Association purchases art work by Winfield artist

FitzwaterTo show support for local artists, the Cowley College Endowment Association purchased a piece of art at Winfield’s Art in the Park on October 4, 2014. A pastel landscape painted by Winfield resident Martha Fitzwater was selected because it captures the beauty of nature in Kansas.

“Martha’s painting is wonderful and I’m glad we were able to pick one from a local artist,” Cowley College vice president for institutional advancement Ben Schears said.

Fitzwater is involved with various endeavors in the community, including teaching an art course at Southwestern College and displaying her works at Winfield’s Gallery 1001. She has been a supporter of Cowley College for many years. While she was an art instructor at Winfield High School, her students were well represented at Cowley College Art Day, and Martha herself took several painting courses from Mark Flickinger.

“The arts play a critical role in the development and sustainability of our communities and it’s important to do what we can to support them,” Schears said.

Along with Schears, Diana Dicken, Cowley College director of web services, assisted in selecting the artwork that was purchased.
