Coming to Cowley helped rejuvenate November Student of the Month

Ian BrannanDisenchanted with school, Ian Brannan was unsure if he wanted to attend college. A visit to Cowley College changed all that and brought back the joy Brannan was missing while pursuing his education.

After a successful first three semesters at the school, Brannan was recently recognized as Cowley College’s November Student of the Month.

Ian is the son of Doug and Jeanine Brannan of South Hutchinson, KS. He has two sisters, Mallory Bohnenblust 30, and Emily Brannan 21, and two brothers, Josh Urban 33, and Matt Britton 29.

Grandparents are, Gary and Jennifer Barber of Hutchinson, KS, and Lauren Snell of Hutchinson.

He graduated from Haven High School in 2013. At Haven, he was involved in band, tennis, cross country, and the Wildcat Singers.

Despite his involvement in school activities, Brannan did not have an enjoyable high school experience.

Still, at the urging of his mother, he decided to look into colleges to attend. After narrowing his choices down to four community colleges in Kansas, a visit to Cowley College helped seal the deal.

“What really separated the schools was Senior Day at Cowley,” Brannan said. “Everyone seemed so happy to be at school and there was so much to do here. I left Senior Day excited to go to school for the first time in 10 years.”

At Cowley, he is involved in Movie Club, Cowley County Young Democrats, and is a student ambassador, Cowley tutor, co-president of Creative Claws, and is the president of the Diverse Tigers Club.

“I love Cowley so much that is has become like a second home to me,” Brannan said. “The teachers are all nice and have made it a real positive experience.”

The instructors at Cowley have also enjoyed having Brannan in the classroom.

“Ian is a hard working student that is always willing to help and always maintains a positive attitude,” said a Cowley instructor that nominated Brannan for Student of the Month.

Outside of Cowley, Brannan has served as a Big Brother in the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program of Cowley County for each of the past three semesters.

The Creative Writing major enjoys writing poetry and short stories and hopes to one day write a book.

After Cowley he plans to transfer to the University of Kansas.

Being named Cowley College’s November Student of the Month is something Brannan does not take for granted.

“I have worked so hard, so to get some recognition for that is awesome,” Brannan said.
