More than 1,500 students attend Children’s Theatre production of The Velveteen Rabbit

Velveteen RabbitCowley College’s Children’s Theatre production of the new adaptation of Margery Williams’ classic children’s story The Velveteen Rabbit, was performed in front of more than 1,500 students Monday and Tuesday in the Robert Brown Theatre. There was also a Tuesday evening performance that was open to the public.

Theatre Director John Sefel was proud of the work done in making the show a success.

“It’s only my second show here, but working with these amazing students throughout this show’s process really helped me start to feel at home,” Sefel said.

Schools represented were, Francis Willard, C-4, Jefferson, Ark City Christian Academy, Adams, IXL, Roosevelt,  Sacred Heart, First Lutheran (Ponca City, OK), St. Mary’s (Ponca City, OK), Shidler (OK), Newkirk (OK), Lowell Elementary in Winfield, Central-Burden, Cedar Vale, and Dexter.

The Velveteen Rabbit was first published in 1922. The story deals with innocence, grief, and connections we make for those we love.

In the play, The Velveteen Rabbit, a stuffed bunny, is a Christmas present for a young girl named Jo, played by Abby Killman.

The stuffed animal finds itself surrounded by other toys and involved in many adventures with Jo. The rabbit hopes to one day become a real rabbit through the love of its owner.

The set, which was a child’s upstairs bedroom in a little house on the edge of a forest, and later a forest, was designed by technical director Jamison Rhoads as well as the cast, crew, and members of Theatre Practicum.

Sefel said the Theatre Department is already thinking about what to perform for next year’s Children’s Theatre production, but for now, it’s on to auditions for the Spring Play “Charley’s Aunt”.
