Cowley student receives award from Soroptimist International of Arkansas City

Soroptimist International of Arkansas City, a local organization that works to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment, recently presented a $1,500 Soroptimist Live Your Dream: Education and Training Awards for Women to help Cowley College student Veronica Marin improve her economic situation.

The awards ceremony was held at the Arkansas City Public Library on March 8. The Arkansas City Soroptimists held its awards ceremony in conjunction with International Women’s Day—the day that celebrates women’s contributions to society.

Marin will use this award to complete her Associate’s degree at Cowley College, where she is majoring in elementary education. Once she completes her studies, Marin, plans to transfer to Wichita State University and obtain her Bachelor’s degree.

“I am very humbled and honored to be receiving this award,” Marin said. “The Soroptimist Live Your Dream Award was a huge blessing that I never thought was possible.”

The Live Your Dream Award provides women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families with the financial resources to offset costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education or additional skills and training. The Arkansas City Soroptimists chose Marin because of her optimistic attitude, her stellar grade-point-average in college and the excellent recommendations she received.

Marin has been raising 10 children on the money she earns. Marin will now advance to the Soroptimist South Central Region level, where recipients can receive up to an additional $5,000. The program culminates with three $10,000 finalists at the national level.
