Payton Baker named April Student of the Month

Payton BakerPayton Baker, an accounting major from Wellington, KS, was recently named Cowley College’s April Student of the Month.

Baker, the son of Paul Baker and Amy Norris, graduated from Wellington High School in 2014. He has two sisters, Adrienne Norris 14, and Madison Baker 12. He also has a brother, Justin Norris 12. His grandmother, Susan Beeson, and grandfather, Jeff Ferguson, also reside in Wellington.

While in high school, Baker was a member of the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and participated in football, baseball, and basketball.

He chose to attend Cowley College’s main campus in Arkansas City because it was close to home and he was offered a Trustee Scholarship.

“I am glad I came here, I love the family atmosphere,” Baker said.

At Cowley, he is involved in Phi Theta Kappa, DECA, Mu Alpha Theta Math & Science Club, and is a Resident Assistant at The Lodge dormitory.

Away from Cowley he holds part-time jobs in Wellington at Security State Bank and Dollar General.

Somehow, he has balanced his studies and has managed to record a 4.0 grade point average.

He is happy to see his hard work be noticed by being named the school’s April Student of the Month.

“It means a lot to represent the school as Student of the Month,” Baker said. “I credit my parents and my advisor, Sarah Mathews.”

Baker also credits his high school accounting teacher, Rane Case, with helping him grow an interest in accounting as he hopes to one day work for an accounting firm.

“I am good with numbers and find math to be one of my favorite subjects,” Baker said.

After Cowley, Baker plans to transfer to Wichita State University. However, if he could he would remain a student at Cowley.

“If it was a four-year school I would stay at Cowley, I love it here,” Baker said.
