Cowley student receives scholarship from General Federation of Women’s Clubs

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) recently selected Cowley College freshman Ashlynn Brake as the recipient of a $750 scholarship for the 2016-2017 school year.

The GFWC has been giving scholarships to Kansas community colleges and universities for more than 80 years. They select one college each year and this year they chose to give a scholarship to Brake.

“Receiving a scholarship from an extremely notable organization that strives to improve the community and enhance the lives of those in it is truly an honor,” Brake said.

Prior to coming to Cowley College Brake attended Arkansas City High School where she was

involved in volleyball, track, multiple musicals, symphonic choir, marching and concert band, National Honors Society, KAYs, and Student Council serving as class president.

With a burning desire to help people in need, Brake is a pre-medicine major at Cowley.

“Ashlynn has been a great student during her time at Cowley,” Cowley College vice president for institutional advancement Ben Schears said. “We are honored that the General Federation of Women’s Clubs Scholarship Commission recognized her talent and potential and were able to provide the scholarship for her.”

Brake has worked hard to persevere through any obstacles she has faced along the way and plans to put the scholarship to good use.

“The members in this organization (GFWC) aim to do many things such as preserve the arts, advance education, and encourage healthy lifestyles among those in the community, and I believe that these are very important factors of a strong and successful community,” Brake said. “I am very grateful to have been chosen as the recipient for a scholarship from such a remarkable group.”
