Back to school events planned at Cowley College

With classes at Cowley College set to begin on Tuesday, August 18, several exciting events have been planned for the first week of school.

The festivities will begin with a cookout outside the Nelson Student Center from 4:30-6 p.m. Sunday, August 16.

Students will then gather inside the Robert Brown Theatre Monday, August 17 at 10 a.m. to hear a presentation titled “The Hook Up, When it’s Hot and When it’s Not”. The Hook-Up engages audiences in a facilitated discussion about hooking-up, sexual assault and bystander intervention. The Hook-Up begins with a discussion on how gender stereotypes contribute to rape culture and harm survivors. Next, the program unpacks the practice of hooking-up, and identifies the differences between a healthy hook-up, a regretted hook-up and a sexual assault.

The program explores the research of Dr. David Lasik and examines how perpetrators’ modus operandi is often masked by the norms of contemporary hook-up culture.

Later that evening there will be a Club/Church/Business Fair at 7 p.m. The event will feature an ice cream social and will allow students an opportunity to sign up for intramural activities.

From 6-10 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18, Cowley students can meet in the Nelson Student Center to have a custom photo cell phone cover made. Free drinks and popcorn will be provided.

Famed hypnotist “Spidey” will perform Wednesday, August 19 at 7 p.m. inside the Robert Brown Theatre. The event is free for Cowley students. Spidey was nominated Canadian Magician of the Year. He has emerged as an elite performer in the realm of hypnosis, mentalism and magic. He was a finalist on Canada’s Got Talent and has been featured on numerous television shows.

The Back to School Dance will take place Thursday, August 20 from 8:30-11:30 p.m. in the Earle N. Wright Community Room, while Chris Cakes of Wichita will be on campus Friday, August 21 to serve up free pancakes from 9-11 p.m. Students can then head over to the Cowley Cinema 8 for a free late night movie at midnight. Students must show their Cowley ID.

On August 22-23 Cowley students can swim for free at the Arkansas City High School indoor pool. The free swim will take place from 1-6 p.m. Saturday and 2-6 p.m. Sunday.

Several other exciting events and activities will be planned throughout the fall semester.
