Education Program hosts science workshops

workshopThe Cowley College Education Program and Director of Education, Julie Rhoads, hosted science workshops sponsored by the Kansas Strong Organization on Saturday, October 3rd. This organization is part of the Kansas Gas and Oil initiative to support science education in Kansas schools.

Vice president of Academic Affairs, Dr. Harold Arnett, welcomed approximately 50 K-12 teachers from around the state to Cowley College and expressed his gratitude for their commitment to the profession. This is the fourth year for Cowley to host the workshops, which offers licensed teachers a $50 stipend for attendance, science units designed around KSDE curriculum standards and a free kit. This year was the first year to include grades 9-12 CORE Math and Science with teachers receiving over $1,000 worth of items, like T84 graphing calculators, in the kits.

Teachers drove from as far as Goddard, Derby, Caldwell, Caney and Bucklin to attend the event. Rhoads indicated collaboration with Candace Davis of Kansas Strong will have Cowley hosting a future event in March or April at the Wichita and Mulvane facilities. As soon as those dates are nailed down, teachers will be notified and the events will be promoted to the Wichita and Surrounding suburban school districts.

While last Saturday’s event included K-12, the spring workshops will focus on Middle School and High School Science and Math. Teachers attending those sessions will also receive the $50 stipend, lesson plans and all the supplies needed to implement the lessons in the classroom.
