Cowley AEC team places second at state

Cowley AEC team places second at stateSetting out with the goal of placing first at the KAEC State Championship held March 31-April 1 at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, KS, the Cowley College Academic Excellence Challenge team finished a close second to Coffeyville Community College.

Coffeyville remained remarkably consistent all weekend, scoring between 300 and 380 points in all eight games, which resulted in a second place finish for Cowley among eight teams at the tournament.

“Our team was disappointed because we had played so well until we met up with Coffeyville,” AEC sponsor Dianne Flickinger said.

Coffeyville had only answered one more bonus question than Cowley before going into the final playoff rounds. Cowley scored between 290 and 390 points and won the first six games, but dropped to 210 - 350 and 280 - 370 points in the last two rounds with Coffeyville.

Coffeyville has four freshmen that remained undefeated all weekend as the Red Ravens claimed their first state title in 24 years.

Individual players were ranked by how many tossups were answered for their team to earn the opportunity to answer three more bonus questions. Cowley’s Daltin Brock received a fifth place medal, while Chase LaPorte came in eighth, Harvey Baker tied for 10th, and Jesse McCabe was 21st.

Cowley also had a JV team that played the only other JV team of Neosho County Community College. Cowley had a 3-4 win-loss record against Neosho, but outscored them in points with 1,330 to 1,270.  Aimee Schwintz was Cowley’s key JV player answering 45 toss-up questions out of 168 heard. Schwintz came in first place out of nine players. Claryssa Weis came in fifth, Symantha Shelton placed seventh; Edgar Fuentes finished eighth; and Ashley Simpson came in ninth.
