Theatre Department prepares for exciting season

The students and faculty of the Cowley College Theatre Department are busy preparing for several exciting events during the 2016-17 school year.

Cowley is once again collaborating with Southwestern College in Winfield to create the 24 Hour Theatre Festival September 9-10. New works are conceived, written, rehearsed, and performed, from beginning to end, in 24 hours.

November 3-5 the Theatre Department will perform the high energy, fast paced musical “Once Upon a Mattress”. This new take on the classic fairy tale, once starring Carol Burnett, Tracy Ullman, and Sarah Jessica Parker, will make the entire family roll with laughter.

John Rohr, Cowley College’s new technical director, has begun designing his fresh take on the lighting and design, while vocal director David Smith said after countless performances he still bellows over with laughter every time the curtain goes up.

Back by popular demand are the One Acts. All of the one act shows will be student lead in producing these intimate programs. Act One drama club will be presenting “Awesome 80's Prom.” Not the conventional show, the students will be incorporating improvisational skills into the script.

Interim theatre director Cara Kem is encouraging the audience to participate and dress up for the occasion. Door prizes will be awarded for participation.

April 20-22 the Theatre Department will bring Neil Simon's “Rumors” to life. Always a crowd pleaser, the comedic farce is full of misinformation, poor timing, and unfortunate circumstances.

“Our season is pure fun,” Kem said. “I can't wait to play in these wildly different creations.”
