Tiger cross country squad made up of new faces

Tiger cross country squad made up of new facesThe Cowley College men's cross country team will look different to observers during the 2016 season as new head coach Dan Adler will have a squad made up entirely of freshmen and one sophomore transfer.

Adler has been busy recruiting since joining the program in January as he has signed seven runners from Texas and one from Missouri, while also adding sophomore transfer Connor Wright from Point Park University (PA).

Livan Aguilar and Bryan Gutierrez were teammates at Duncanville (TX) High School, while Jorge Ramirez and Richardo Sanchez were high school teammates at Dayton (TX). Other runners from Texas are Miguel Ibarra from Sanger High School, Miguel Martinez from Fort Worth South Hills High School, and Andres Ruiz from Crowley High School.

Destin Gooch from Owensville High School in Missouri rounds out those already signed to compete in 2016.

“All of these young men come from teams that focus on the progressive development of the young runner,” Adler said. “They are not coming from high-mileage, win at all costs, type programs. While at Cowley, we'll continue to promote that development while unifying as a strong unit. These guys all have similar personal best times and were all one of the top runners on their high school teams. This fall, we'll see how they handle getting beat by their teammates in workouts. It will be a new experience for a lot of them.”

The freshmen will have to make the transition from running the 5K distance to competing in 8K races, while keeping the squad healthy will also be key.

“We are not as deep as I would like us to be, but this is a great group of young men that have come in with a terrific attitude,” Adler said.

In year one in charge of the men’s cross country team Adler hopes the squad can finish in the top-five in the region and top-20 in the nation.

“Anything more than that is gravy,” Adler said. “This big group of freshmen will help us establish a base of success for years to come.”
The Tigers will open the season Friday, August 26 at the Allen Red Devil Duals in Iola, KS.
