Paramedic students achieve 100% pass rate

Cowley College students in the Andover 2015-2016 Paramedic class had a 100% pass rate on the program final exams held over the last two weeks at the Winfield campus. In addition to a validated final written examination, the students all completed a high-fidelity simulation of an ambulance call while being evaluated by the program faculty, program director, and Cowley EMS medical director Dr. Kent Potter.

The students treated simulated patients suffering from various medical and trauma emergencies. After the simulation final the students then completed "mock boards", a hands-on final exam that closely mimics the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification exam.

“I am very proud of our student's accomplishments,” said Chris Cannon, EMS Program Director and Department Chair. “We have received multiple compliments from local industry partners on the quality, compassionate care they provided in our communities during their training.”

The students completed their field internship training from June through August at Sedgwick County EMS, Butler County EMS, Miami County EMS and Winfield Fire/EMS.

This cohort was the first paramedic class taught by Samantha Troyer, Lead Paramedic Instructor at Cowley.

“This is Sam's first class, and she did an excellent job,” Cannon said. “She is one of the most natural and innovative teachers I have had the pleasure to work with here at Cowley.”

Troyer was also recently awarded the Kansas EMT Association “2016 Educator of the Year” award.

The program graduates will next challenge the NREMT hands-on certification exam on September 9, and will later take the NREMT written certification exam. Cowley graduates historically have a 100% pass rate for the hands-on exam and a 98.5% pass rate for the written exam since the inception of the program in 1997.

The Andover Paramedic class is offered through a partnership with Butler Community College at their Butler of Andover campus.
Graduation for the 2015-2016 Andover Paramedic class is scheduled for October 17 at 7 p.m. in the Earle N. Wright Community Room located at Cowley College’s main campus in Arkansas City.
