Pre-nursing major named October Student of the Month

Ashley HusligCowley College sophomore Ashley Huslig is known as someone who gets things done. The outgoing student-athlete was recognized for her accomplishments by being named the school’s October Student of the Month.

Huslig, the daughter of Darren and Rene Huslig, is a pre-nursing major at Cowley College.

Prior to attending Cowley she graduated from Bishop Carroll High School in Wichita, KS. At Carroll, she was a member of the yearbook staff, and participated in basketball, soccer, and tennis.

She was recruited to play tennis at Cowley and spent her freshman year as a member of the nationally ranked Lady Tiger tennis team. She was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar Athlete at the conclusion of her freshman year.

Huslig decided to forego athletics as a sophomore and instead focus more on her academics. That changed when she was approached by a friend about coming out for the Lady Tiger soccer team.

Seeing that the team was in need of players, Huslig decided to return to the sport she played in high school.

“It has been a fun experience getting to meet new people on the soccer team,” Huslig said.

Along with playing soccer, Huslig is also a Cowley Tutor and Student Ambassador. She attended the 2016 Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Leadership Conference and has a grade point average of 3.78.

Deborah Layton, Humanities Department instructor and PTK co-sponsor, has been impressed by the caliber of student Huslig is.

“Ashley gets involved and gets things done,” Layton said. “She takes initiative to see things through not only in class, but outside of class too.”

Outside of Cowley Huslig is a volunteer at Arkansas City elementary schools and helped organize donations for victims of the flooding in Mulvane. She has also assisted in several other PTK projects.

“I have become way more involved this year and it has been a very positive experience,” Huslig said.

Huslig decided to major in pre-nursing so she could pursue a career as a nurse anesthetist. She gained interest in that profession from watching her mother, who is a nurse, and also from shadowing doctors and nurses at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita during her senior year of high school.

“I feel passionate about anesthesia,” Huslig said.

In her free time she enjoys playing the piano and singing.

Huslig said being chosen Student of the Month is an honor.

“I was surprised to be chosen out of all these people,” Huslig said.

After graduating from Cowley she plans to transfer to Newman University or Wichita State University.
