Cowley's Golden Tigers offering spring classes

Cowley's Golden Tigers offering spring classesWith Spring enrollment recently being conducted for classes in the Golden Tigers at Cowley College, there is still time to sign up for some exciting classes.

The Golden Tigers is for women and men age 50 and over. There is a $5 registration fee and a fee of $2 per spring class. Some classes have additional costs or supplies needed.

In the event of class cancellations due to weather, Cowley College will post the announcement on its web site and on area radio stations. Information will also be listed on the Golden Tiger voice mail at 620-441-5286.

The AARP Driver Safety Class will be offered Wednesday and Thursday March 7 and 8 from 1-5 p.m. The class will be held at Cowley College, Webb-Brown Academic Center Room 103. Ron Upton will teach the class. The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members.

The Golden Tigers also have four educational trips planned in the spring. Persons wanting more information on the trips should contact Adriana Somerville at 620.441.5286, or by email at adriana.somerville@cowley.edu.

Here is a list of trips offered in the spring:

Thursday, March 1 – Wichita, KS. The group will travel to WSU to see Little Women, the spring musical, based on the famous book written by Louisa May Alcott. The group will eat at a Wichita restaurant before the show starts. Departure time is 4:30 p.m. The musical begins at 7:30 p.m. Deadline to sign up is Tuesday, February 15th. Cost is $50 and includes dinner and ticket.

Tuesday, March 13 – Mystery Trip. The group will travel to an unknown destination where adventure awaits. Depart at 8 a.m. and return around 6 p.m. Cost is $50 and includes lunch.

Tuesday, April 3 – Lawrence, KS. The group will visit the Watkins Museum of History and several places on the University of Kansas campus. Lunch will be served on campus and there will be time to explore Massachusetts Street. Depart at 8 a.m. and return around 6 p.m. Cost is $50 and includes lunch.

Tuesday, April 17 – Springfield, MO. The group will visit the new Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium and the Bass Pro Shop. Be sure to bring along some extra cash if you would like to get yourself something from either place. Depart at 7a.m. and return around 9 p.m. Cost is $50 and includes lunch and dinner.

FEBRUARY

Aqua Fun (Session I) – Monday, Wednesday, Friday, February 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 21, 23, 26, 28, and March 2, 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Family Aquatics Center, ACHS. Debbie Davidson, Instructor. Participants will be led by trained personnel through a series of specially designed exercises that can help increase joint flexibility and improve mobility. There will be a $3.00 pool fee for this class. 

Aerobics (Session I) – Monday and Wednesday, February 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 21, 26 and 28, 1:30 – 2:15 p.m., Ben Cleveland Wellness Center. Rikki Hettenbach, Instructor. This energetic and upbeat class is sure to get your body moving. It’s fun and relatively easy with a mix of 50’s to today’s music hits that combine dancing, cardio and light weights for a great total body workout.

Exercise – (Session I) – Tuesday & Thursday, February 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22 and 27, and March 1, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m., Ben Cleveland Wellness Center. LaDona Anstine, Instructor. Functional exercises will be done in a comfortable setting with the goal of improving stability and mobility of joints, strength and endurance of muscles, as well as the promotion of overall well-being. 

Restorative Yoga – Wednesday and Fridays, January 31, February 2, 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, and 23, 11 a.m. to noon, Brown Center Room 203. Ruy Vaz, Instructor. Restorative Yoga is considered the dessert of yoga. This class is designed for those who prefer a slow, gentle stretch. Great for participants who need to decompress, relax and release tension. Remember to bring your Yoga matt.

Line Dancing – Tuesdays, February 6, 13, 20, 27, Ben Cleveland Wellness Center. Debra Holman – Instructor. Learn 5-6 dances per session – slow to medium tempo.

Computers: I Want to Do – Mondays – February 5, 12, 19 and 26, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center, Room 105. Ron Upton, Instructor. Creating a mailing list using Excel and Avery labels, saving items from the internet and downloading, file management and finding items on my computer. Be sure to bring your flash drive and laptop.

Card Games – Monday, February 5, 12, 19, 26, 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m., Ben Cleveland Wellness Center. Debra Holman, Instructor. Learn to play 5 Crowns, Hand and Foot, Kings in the Corner, Skipo, Uno, and Fan Tan.

Cooking Class - Wednesday, January 31, February 7, 14, 21. Jennifer Munson’s house. Jennifer Munson, Instructor. For both novices and experienced cooks alike, this hands-on course will progress from kitchen basics to creating delicious meals simply and easily. From how to read a recipe and identify various measurements and kitchen tools, to chopping fresh vegetables to make homemade soup, this fun class has something for everyone. Each class will end with a light lunch that the group created.

Downloading data or pictures and using them in a program or document. Creating reports and sharing. Be sure to bring you laptop and flash drive.

AARP Driver Safety – Wednesday and Thursday, March 7 and 8, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center – Room 103. Ron Upton, Instructor. The Driver Safety program is an 8-hour classroom refresher course. You must attend both session to receive a certificate. Insurance companies in Kansas give a discount to seniors who complete the course. $15 for AARP members, $20 for non-members.

APRIL

Photography: Getting Better Pictures – Mondays, April 9, 16, 23, and 30, 1:30 - 3:30 p.m., Webb-Brown Academic Center – Room 105. Ron Upton, Instructor. Using Adobe Elements to fix/repair pictures. Including pictures in your documents and reports. Reproducing and copying images to use in albums. Copying pictures from your cell phone to a computer. Please be sure to bring your laptop, camera and flash drive.

Spooling Around With Fabric – Thursdays, April 3 and 10, 9:30 a.m. -3:30 p.m., Senior Center. Margaret Neal, Instructor. Class participants will learn techniques for making a spool block. This block will be used to create a small wall hanging, table runner or quilt. It can be created with scraps, pre-cuts or fat quarters. A supply list will be provided at enrollment.
