Istas selected to participate in OCTAE initiative

Brooke Istas, Lead Math faculty instructor at Cowley CollegeBrooke Istas, Lead Math faculty instructor at Cowley College, was recently selected to participate in an initiative from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education (OCTAE) designed to ensure that every adult learner receives the applied math skills they need to succeed in the real world.

Istas will be on a team with 20 other educators and experts in math education to identify and review high-quality open educational resources that can be freely accessed online.

Istas said this initiative follows the Kansas Perkins Leadership Grant the College was awarded last year.

“I am honored to be selected. I know there were several high caliber instructors who applied to be a part of this initiative from all across this nation so to be selected really speaks to work we are doing in the Cowley Natural Science & Mathematics Department,” Istas said.

Istas will go through orientation during the month of August before taking part in user group classroom evaluations and reviews during the months of September through December.

“I hope by participating in this project that I grow as an instructor by learning about what Open Educational Resources are available and open up mathematical tasks so that all learners can achieve their educational goals and also share my growth with my colleagues,” Istas said.
