Early Childhood Education program receives USDA Grant to purchase supplies

 

Early Childhood Education program receives USDA Grant to purchase suppliesWith plans of starting a Mother's Day Out program at Cowley College, Cowley College's Early Childhood Development program was the recipient of a USDA grant totaling $6,786.


Janet Davidson, Director of Child Care and Development/Early Childhood Education at Cowley College, filed a pre-application with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, for financial assistance to acquire equipment for the Child Care and Development/Early Childhood Education Program.


A meeting regarding the proposed application was held on September 22, in the Earle N. Wright Community Room. The public was invited to attend. During the meeting, Cowley College president Dr. Dennis C. Rittle signed papers listing intent to meet conditions.


The USDA grant supplies 35 percent of the total budget for the Mother’s Day Out program, which is planning to be offered two Saturday’s a month beginning in November. The program will offer childcare, for those age six weeks to eight years old, while parents are encouraged to shop local businesses in advance of Christmas.


Davidson said the USDA grant will allow the Early Childhood Education program to purchase educational carpets, a puppet center, curriculum sets, advanced technology equipment, and also teach proper nutrition.


Davidson said she is looking forward to working with the USDA and Cowley to better serve the students and community of Arkansas City.
“We hope to enhance creativity and cognitive abilities in six month olds to eight year olds,” Davidson said.
