Original works presented at Writers' Corner

Original works presented at Writers CornerThe first Writers’ Corner of the academic year was a success, with nine student and three faculty writers presenting 25 original works. The event is hosted each semester by the students in the Creative Writing program at Cowley College.

“We had a really nice crowd, with quite a lot of community and family support, for our first Writers’ Corner”, said Marlys Cervantes, Humanities & Communications chair and director of the program. “This group obviously has people in their lives who are interested in their writing and their goals.”

Students presenting works were Connor Baxter, Abbey Ferris, Grayson Gorday, Hannah Lyles, Grace Nightingale, J.C. Pappan, Jayla Williams, Bronte Young, and Jocelyn Young. Both Baxter and Jocelyn Young are taking classes on the Mulvane campus this semester, and Lyles splits her time between the two campuses. Nightingale is a concurrent high school student at Ark City High School. Faculty members presenting were Cervantes, Ryan Doom, and Kyle Hays.

When asked about the works presented, Cervantes said, “It was hard for many of these students to choose what they would present because they already have a very solid collection of writing. I am so proud of their courage to share these pieces with others.”

The next writers’ event will be a student showcase on December 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the Earle N. Wright Community Room in Cowley College’s Brown Center. Anyone interested in the Creative Writing program should contact Marlys Cervantes at or at 620-441-5560.
