Recreation building to be named Linda Adams Hargrove Athletic Center

“Linda Hargrove is a pioneer in women’s sports at Cowley College,” wrote Cowley College president Dr. Dennis C. Rittle in the summary of the naming committee’s recommendation to the Cowley College Board of Trustees. The legendary basketball and volleyball coach left her mark on the college and will be honored for her accomplishments as the Board approved the naming advisory committee’s recommendation that the Cowley College Recreational Building located at 617 West Washington Avenue be named the Linda Adams Hargrove Athletic Center. The announcement was made during Cowley College’s regularly scheduled monthly Board of Trustees meeting held Tuesday, January 16 in the McAtee Dining Center.

Hargrove is the second all-time winningest coach in the history of the Cowley College women’s basketball and volleyball programs. She won 316 games as head coach of the Lady Tiger basketball team from 1972-1989 and accumulated 292 wins during 10 seasons in charge of the volleyball team (1976-1985).

Hargrove earned National Basketball Coach of the Year honors in 1987, was named Region VI Coach of the Year four times, and coached several All-Americans in basketball and volleyball. She is the only Cowley coach to take basketball and volleyball teams to the national tournament. Linda was also an outstanding athlete at Cowley. She played volleyball, basketball, softball, and started Cowley’s track team. She chaired a drive for a bond issue to build a new campus, and she later served as director of admissions. She was inducted into the inaugural class of the Tiger Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000.

Following her coaching career at Cowley, she went on to serve as the head women’s basketball coach at Wichita State University from 1989-1998 and was later the general manager and head coach of the Portland Fire of the Women’s National Basketball Association, and general manager of the WNBA’s Washington Mystics.

Bob Juden was presented with a plaque from Cowley College president Dr. Dennis C. Juden was presented with a plaque from Cowley College president Dr. Dennis C. Rittle recognizing the work he did as Board Chair over the previous 18 months. JoLynn Foster conducted her first meeting as Board Chair on Tuesday.

All members of the Board of Trustees were sworn in on January 8, 2018, including new Board members, Glennis Zimmerman, Nancy Burger, and Gary Wilson.

“I wish to welcome our new members, we could not have hand-picked anybody better,” Juden said. “Thanks to all the new members and the people that showed interest in the position.”

In other matters:

1. Cowley College president Dr. Dennis C. Rittle provided a College update. Dr. Rittle informed the Board that enrollment continues to climb and spoke of the local economic impact the college has. Dr. Rittle also summarized several initiatives the college offers that benefit the Cowley County community, such as additional security support thanks to its student patrol, entertainment opportunities in athletics and theatre productions, the use of College facilities for local civic groups, economic development impact, and workforce/career training.
Dr. Rittle also informed the Board that Cowley College has the third lowest mill levy among the 19 community colleges in the state of Kansas. “We take pride in being fiscally responsible,” Dr. Rittle said. “Our students depend on us to provide a quality education at an affordable rate.”
2. Jessica Lucas, Government Affairs Liaison, provided the Board with a legislative update. Lucas said Governor Sam Brownback recently announced his budget would include provisions to fully fund Senate Bill 155. For K-12, the Governor supports adding $600 million over the next five years. Legislators in the budget committees appear to favor not moving immediately on the Governor’s recommendations for K-12 funding and instead will wait for the results of the study they commissioned. The study will not be available until March 15, but it then goes to another consultant for peer review.
Lucas also mentioned the Higher Education Day in Topeka on Thursday, January 18 in which Dr. Rittle and other Cowley representatives will be in attendance.
3. Approved fiscal officers of the College to execute payment of all bills and claims as presented with general operating funds of $1,128,416.77, activities disbursement including Foundation funds of $1,966.18, and federal funds of $3,233.57 for a total written of $1,133,616.62.
4. Authorized Chair JoLynn Foster to sign documents related to the transfer of ownership of Carver Park property from the City of Arkansas City to Cowley College.
5. Michael Bergagnini, Mayor of Parkerfield, asked the Board to revisit bowling as a sport at Cowley College’s Mulvane Campus. The Board thanked Mr. Bergagnini for his input and informed him that expensive thought, research, and discussion went into the decision to approve the addition of bowling.
6. The Board authorized the college to negotiate and execute a final termination agreement and final termination payment to Knowlura, formerly known as BEST.
7. Approved the purchase of the entire external signage/wayfinding package with APCO Graphics, Inc. for the Ark City campus. Dr. Gloria Walker, vice president of finance and administration, presented a slide show for the signage project. There will be information signs at six locations on the main campus, pedestrian signage, building signage, vehicle signage, and LED signage to assist students, campus guests, and community members. 
8. Dr. Walker informed the Board the college recently purchased a new theatre ticket printer and has donated the old one to the Ark City Arts Council. Dr. Walker also provided an update on the Sumner Campus. Dr. Walker said construction is moving right along for the Tech Center to open in the fall.
9. Devin Graves, registrar, filled in for Dr. Harold Arnett, vice president of academic affairs, in providing an academic update. Graves informed the Board that the Blackboard cumulative upgrade took place on January 11. The upgrade will address specific bugs in the system and also pave the way for ALLY, an accessibility product built directly into Blackboard LMS to support faculty in the development of their online courses. Graves also mentioned served and supported 111 students with over 70 hours of tutoring in various subjects in the month of December. Ninety-six percent of students utilizing the product state they are glad our institution offers this service, and 95% would recommend to a friend. Lastly, Graves mentioned the numerous student successes indicated in the Winter Session report and shared with the Board that Shelby Huddleston, director of instructional technology, attended the MoKanSan State Authorization Summit in Kansas City, MO on January 8.
10. Dr. Kori Gregg, vice president of institutional advancement, said giving is up significantly at the college. The college received close to $400,000 more in donations from the previous year and since incorporating the Square payment process into the Foundation website there has been a sizeable increase in giving. “This shows the confidence people have in the foundation and the college,” Dr. Gregg said.
Dr. Gregg also discussed the ongoing annual campaign and tear cards that were in the Winter Alumni Newsletter to help assist with the new Alumni database.
Dr. Gregg also mentioned the Foundation’s partnership with housing where they will execute a 3D virtual tour project with a company from Wichita that executes similar content for real estate projects.
11. Paul Erdmann, vice president of information technology, informed the Board that a major system update of Jenzabar EX and JICS portal was recently completed. Erdmann also provided an update on the desktop computer replacement project. To date, 450 machines have been deployed.
12. Kristi Shaw, executive director of enrollment management, provided an enrollment update. Shaw said enrollment is up at the college with 2,395 students already enrolled for the spring semester.
13. Chris Hollon, executive director of institutional effectiveness, discussed the recent in-service event at the college where the team that went to Chicago for the HLC retreat shared information from the trip. Hollon also informed the Board that the IPEDS data is in the process of completion for the winter collection, and the KBOR follow up data is being collected from the Perkins Eligible Programs and will be reviewed and completed by Feb. 15. This data is important to the college for funding purposes.
14. Shane Larson, athletic director, filled in for Jason O’Toole, executive director of student affairs, to provide a housing update. Larson said the dorms are at 92.9 percent occupancy. Student Life counselor Ashley Demaree has returned from maternity leave, and work on the outdoor basketball goals is underway next to the Linda Adams Hargrove Athletic Center.
15. Deborah Layton, faculty liaison, informed the Board that the Criminal Justice program has entered into an MOU with the City of Winfield and will be extending student patrol services into Winfield to help establish more of a Cowley presence. She also mentioned that mathematics instructor Brooke Istas recently completed a second Master’s of Science in Adult and Continuing Education at Kansas State University and facilitated online professional development for Morehead University in Kentucky on Implementing Mathematical Practices in the Adult Education Classroom. Lastly, Layton mentioned the tremendous impact upon student success of the Cowley College Writing Center.
16. Shane Larson, athletic director, congratulated baseball coach Dave Burroughs on being selected for induction into the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. He also informed the Board that the college is preparing to host the South Central Border League boys and girl’s basketball tournament January 18-20, and the Tiger Booster Club Hall of Fame Luncheon Saturday, January 27 at 12 p.m.
17. Approved the employment of Brandon Burke as admissions representative, effective January 17; approved the employment of Candy Russel as Natural Science Department secretary, effective January 17.
18. Approved the appointment of Ned Graham as a finance subcommittee Board representative, replacing Bob Juden.
