Quiz Bowl teams take part in regional tournament
February 16, 2021
On Saturday, February 13, the Cowley College quiz bowl teams took part in the Kansas East and West Regional Tournament via Zoom. Usually, the East and the West have their own regional, but both were combined due to COVID-19.
Cowley competed against four colleges in seven rounds; Garden City A & B, Cowley A & B, Coffeyville, Neosho, and Johnson. Competing only against Kansas teams, wins were easier to come by, with Cowley A (Jacob Denholm, captain KayLynn Prough, Dakota Kerner, and Shelby Fuqua) taking third place.
“Cowley A played so much better than the last tournament because they are working well as a team,” Cowley team sponsor Dianne Flickinger said. “We will continue to practice on Tuesdays for an hour until the State tournament in April. Our goal is to beat Garden City A or Johnson at State.”
Cowley B (Captain Aidan Sanders, Nikki Lugtigheid, and Todd Ketron) took seventh place.
“It is not easy to have three people on a team when we could have four, yet Nikki Lugtigheid answered her first question about her homeland, the Netherlands. Students usually know more answers, but players have to buzz-in quicker than the other team,” Flickinger said.
Cowley A was led by Jacob Denholm in fourth place and team captain, KayLynn Prough, who came in ninth individually.
“Jacob has an advantage over most players because he can answer math questions quickly,” Flickinger said.
Cowley B was led by Aidan Sanders, who came in 19th individually.
