The Creative Writing Program at Cowley College hosted the first Writers Corner of the academic year in the Jungle (Nelson Student Center). The College provided drinks and cookies for students and guests, while all were entertained with a variety of genre. Twelve writers, with one alumni special guest and two faculty, presented a total of 30 original works.
“These student-writers are a creative group who are willing to express their thoughts and emotions in ways that not everyone can,” says Marlys Cervantes, director of the Creative Writing Program. “They are brave to bring that work forward in a public setting. It’s different to present your own works in this way. I’m so proud of all of them.”
The crowd heard poetry inspired by loss, friendship, nature, dreams, and more. They heard interesting fiction, inspiring non-fiction, traditional poetic forms like the sonnet and tanka, and new forms such as the duplex. Guests came to watch family members, friends, and even former students present their writing.
Students presenting works at the event were Zarek Burkert, Nikki Crosser, Makayla Dick, Garrick Johnson, Josie Munson, Bryce Runyan, Macy Shreffler, Braden Snider, Eden Williams. Special alumni guest was Tyler Thielen, and faculty presenters were Cervantes and Ryan Doom.
