LuauLuau at Mulvane

The Math and Science Club at Mulvane held the Third Annual LUAU on April 19th.

$115 was raised, pineapple glazed ham, pulled pork and sides of barbecued beans, banana pineapple sweet potato casserole, Hawaiian Cole Slaw and a variety of fresh fruit.

A big thank you goes out to Mulvane's Math and Science club president Ashly Clark and Dillon Shipman resident tutor for all their help with the event.


2012 Bridge Design Contest Winners

2012 Bridge WinnersUsing resources provided by the West Point Academy, Cowley College Math & Science Club sponsored a "local bridge design contest" March 1 through April 15.

The Cowley College students submitting the lowest cost load baring designs during the duration of the contest were eligible for the prizes as well as (and maybe more important) Bragging Rights.

There were 20 total entries

  • First Place - Eric Belt ($157644) winner of the Mandolin.
  • Second Place - Dillon Shipman ($158686) winner of the e-reader
  • Third Place - Robert Swallow ($162099) winner of the catfish combo
  • Fourth Place - Jon Brooks, ($164900) winner of the GPS
  • Fifth Place - Kevin Sneeringer ($165176) winner of the Digital Microscope


Mile of PiePi Day at Mulvane

Pi Day came to a climactic end around 3:55PM on Wednesday, March 14. A total of $56.73 was raised for the Math & Science Club.

Participants were Chad Killblane, Cynthia Jones, Uwe Conrad, and the Tutors.

Chad took the first pie of the day while Uwe Conrad joined tutors at the end.


Pie in faceThe festivities included the popular “Mile of Pie” and concluded with the pieing of participants.


The newly elected president of the Mulvane Math & Science Club – Ashley Clark launched most of the pies. Tutors receiving pies were Michael Fox, Robert Swallow, Dillon Shipman, and Jon Brooks..



soup"Soup for a Buck Day" raises bucks for Big Brothers/Sisters

Tuesday, February 28th was “Soup for a Buck Day”

The Math and Science Club in Mulvane raised $50.50 for Big Brothers/Sisters by selling all you can eat soup for $1.

There were two chicken noodle soups served, one had yoke free noodles, oven roasted potato soup, turkey and brown rice soup, and eleven bean soup.

Cynthia Jones’s Oven roasted potato soup won the contest, it was gone in the first 15 minutes.

Math and Science Day

Students take part in Math and Science Day
For the second straight year, close to 100 students took part in the Math and Science Day events at Cowley College. A total of 105 students and sponsors from nine area high schools took part in Wednesday’s event on the school’s main campus in Arkansas City. read more View photo gallery.


Zoo TripNight at the Zoo

On October 17th, the Math and Science Club went on a Nocturnal Adventure at the Sedgwick County Zoo

The adventure included a night at the zoo, guided tours, games, an animal encounter, a flashlight tour, movie and a bedtime snack. A variety of animals were seen including hedgehogs, snakes, chinchillas and lions.



Activities and Events for Spring

The Math and Science Club in Mulvane had their end of semester BBQ. They had Black Angus Burgers, Nuerenberger Brats, Pulled Pork, and Sauerkraut. The students enjoyed one more relaxing moment in the sun before jumping into finals week.

Eighteen Members Inducted at Spring Ceremony

Mu Theta Theta 2012Pictured are five of eighteen members inducted into Mu Alpha Theta Membership on March 1, 2012.

Cowley College chapter of Mu Alpha Theta held a spring induction ceremony on Thursday, March 1. 

After welcome and introductions by Michelle Schoon, Natural Science Department Chairperson, Sue Saia, Vice President of Student Affairs, addressed the group with a humorous look at “mathletes” and congratulated the students on their achievement. 

Club sponsors, Martin Shaffer and Steve Cooper, and math instructor April Nittler, helped in the initiation ceremony. 


Eighteen students received membership certificates and pins from the National Chapter.  (Melinda Boone, Patrick Curl, Bethany Dillard, Hannah Dillard, Kaitlin Ford, Melissa Grant, Dakota Grote, Joseph Mancine, Joseph Marks, Cody McNulty, Emily Miller, Jody Newman, Justin Parton, Sveta Poovey, Caroline Strickland, Chris Turner, Mark Wagner, Desiree Weakly)

Mu Alpha Theta is an honorary math society for high school and two-year colleges.  Student qualify for membership by receiving an A in college algebra or a B in a higher level math course.
