Grass shirts and coconut bras were the attire for the day when the Mulvane Math and Science Club sponsored their annual luau event on Wednesday, April 16th. Chef Conrad provided the smoked pork and ribs. Members chipped in with cole slaw, assorted fruit, King’s Hawaiian rolls and desserts. Students and staff also enjoyed homemade fruit smoothies and fruit punch. And what luau would be complete without inflatable palm trees, hoola hoops and Hawaiian music? The event raised $156.00 used to cover the cost of field trips.
The next day, club members finally got to see how their home-made airplanes measured up against each other. Members were divided up into teams and had been designing and working on the rubber band airplanes for most of the semester. The planes could be no larger than one cubic foot, had to be launched by hand and propelled with a standard rubber band provided by the club. The group walked across the street to the Mulvane United Methodist Church gym and team members took turns launching the planes. After tweaks and adjustments and several launches, the winner was determined to be the plane built by the team of Brandon McIntosh, Kathryn McIntosh and Daniel Freeland. Other teams entering the competition were Elliot McNelly, Vanessa Onyemechi, and Ashley Ake; Mylissa Dye, Libby Heflin, and Lizzy Rodriguez; Jeramy Lamar, Kaleb Price, and Nicole Maurer; Josh Arseneault, Aaron Rogers, and Trenton Miller.
Sunday, April 27th, members of the club and their guests traveled to Hutchinson to the Cosmosphere. The IMAX Theater was the first stop, where the group watched a movie on D-Day. Next stop was the planetarium where they watched a film about our solar system. Finally, the visitors were entertained by a presentation on rockets and awed by several explosions in Dr. Goddard's Lab. Club members went out to dinner together before heading home.  Making the trip to Hutchinson were faculty sponsor, Uwe Conrad and wife, Cindy, and students Elliot McNelly, Brandon McIntosh, Kathryn McIntosh, Daniel Freeland, Jeramy Lamar and wife, Tammy.
The next scheduled event for the Math and Science Club will be a Cinco de Mayo celebration on May 5th. Members will be serving taco bowls to students and staff for a nominal fee, as usual. The final meeting of the semester will be Wednesday, May 7th, when officers for next year will be elected. All students are invited to attend the math and science club meetings and participate in the events.
