The Cowley College Quiz Bowl team recently placed third at the event held Friday and Saturday at the Salina Area Technical College.

The Cowley A-Team was tied with Johnson County for second place in the semi-final round before being knocked out of a chance to play for a state title. Johnson County would go on to place second behind state champion Garden City.

By placing third, the Cowley A-Team was awarded a $400 scholarship. Leading the Cowley A-Team was sophomore Zane Hubble, who finished as the top individual at the tournament.

The Cowley B-Team went 7-0 in the junior varsity division and were led by Spencer MacLaughlin and Katya Crow placing first and second, respectively.

“Both teams have been a pleasure to coach because they bring energy into practice and tournaments, making them enjoyable experiences,” Cowley Quiz Bowl coach Dianne Flickinger said. “Furthermore, they exhibit excellent teamwork skills, listening to one another effectively. They are willing to learn and improve, recognizing there is always room for growth and development, which enhances their chance of success.”

On the drive up to Salina Area Technical College, the Cowley Quiz Bowl members stopped off in Wichita to see three of Cowley Visual and Performing Arts Department Chair Mark Flickinger’s paintings at Reuben Saunder’s Art Gallery.

They also went to Sandzen’s Art Gallery on the Bethany College campus in Lindsborg and were given a free hardcover art book about Birger Sandzen, before climbing to the top of the castle at Coronado Heights outside of Lindsborg.

Other Cowley A-Team members were: Justin Aggson (ninth place); Elias Robinson (14th place); and Shaybree Hanes (21st place).

Other Cowley B-Team members were: Danny Ball (eighth place JV); Laurence Aggson (11th place JV).
