Cowley College welcomed talented young singers from across the region for its first-ever Elementary Honor Choir on Tuesday, marking the launch of a new tradition celebrating elementary music education and youth performance.

Selected students from Arkansas City Christian Academy, Arkansas City Public Schools, Central Burden, South Haven, Udall, and Sacred Heart were chosen by their elementary music teachers to participate in the inaugural event.

Students and their teachers arrived on the Cowley College main campus at 9:30 a.m. and spent the day preparing five songs they had never seen prior to that morning. Throughout the day, participants learned music, engaged in activities with Cowley College students, enjoyed lunch in the campus dining hall, and watched special performances by Cowley music students.

The day concluded with a public concert in which the newly formed Cowley Youth Choir joined the Cowley Elementary Honor Choir on stage to perform the day’s selections for family, friends, and community members.

The choirs were directed by Lindsay Allen, Cowley College’s Director of Vocal Music, and accompanied by Cowley music instructor Stephen Butler.

“This event was a wonderful celebration of music education and young talent,” Allen said. “Watching these students come together, learn challenging music in just one day, and then perform it so beautifully was incredibly rewarding.”

The inaugural Elementary Honor Choir was made possible through the support of Cowley College and the generous partnership of the V.J. Wilkins Foundation.

Cowley College hopes to continue building on the success of the event and make the Elementary Honor Choir an annual opportunity for young singers throughout the region.
